How to make a Padcicle

A padcicle, or postpartum pad, is a homemade soothing and cooling pad used to alleviate postpartum pain and swelling. Here's how to make one:

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Sanitary pads: Use long, thick pads for maximum coverage.

  • Witch hazel: Preferably alcohol-free, as it is soothing and helps reduce swelling.

  • Aloe vera gel: Provides cooling and healing effects.

  • Lavender essential oil: Optional, for its soothing properties.

  • Plastic wrap or resealable freezer bags: To store the padcicles in the freezer.

  • Spray bottle: For easier application of liquids (optional).

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pads:

    • Open the sanitary pads without removing the adhesive backing or separating the wings. Lay them flat on a clean surface.

  2. Apply Aloe Vera Gel:

    • Spread a generous amount of aloe vera gel onto the surface of each pad. Ensure an even coating but not too much that it saturates the pad.

  3. Add Witch Hazel:

    • Pour or spray witch hazel onto the pads. Again, ensure they are damp but not soaking. About 1-2 tablespoons per pad should suffice.

  4. Add Essential Oil (Optional):

    • If using lavender essential oil, add a few drops (3-5) to each pad. You can mix the drops into the aloe vera gel or witch hazel before application for even distribution.

  5. Wrap and Freeze:

    • Wrap each prepared pad individually in plastic wrap or place them in resealable freezer bags. This prevents them from sticking together and makes them easy to grab when needed.

    • Place the wrapped pads in the freezer and let them freeze completely.

Usage

  • When you need to use a padcicle, take one out of the freezer, remove the plastic wrap, and place it in your underwear as you would with a regular pad.

  • The cooling effect will help reduce swelling and pain.

  • Use as needed, but do not use continuously to avoid prolonged cold exposure (No more than 20 minutes at a time). Alternate with regular pads if necessary.

Tips

  • Preparation: Make a batch of padcicles before giving birth to ensure you have enough on hand for the initial postpartum period.

  • Comfort: If a frozen pad is too cold, let it thaw for a few minutes before using it, or store some in the refrigerator for a milder cooling effect.

  • Safety: Avoid using essential oils if you have sensitive skin or if advised against by your healthcare provider.

Padcicles can provide much-needed relief during the postpartum recovery period, helping to soothe and heal tender areas.
